Greetings!
I’ve earned media in prestigious publications and received national marketing awards and speaking engagements, but most importantly, for the last 20 years, I’ve been in the business of helping people. I’m a marketing and communications consultant whose passion and expertise are deeply rooted in health and wellness, social and health equity, sports, travel, education, and the arts. I’ve independently worked – and thrived – remotely, supporting several clients in various stages of growth since 2014. I love the industries I work within as much as I love providing impeccably integrated marketing communications to clients.
Always curious, after working as a Yale Family Life Fellow and auditing sustainable agriculture classes amid the pandemic, I was eager to learn more about addressing public health challenges and to better understand social determinants of health and the disparities many face today. So, in addition to work, parenting, a relentless volunteerism habit, and teaching yoga, I am currently pursuing a master’s in Health Communication for Social Change from CUNY’s School of Public Health.
Pun-loving and punctilious, I revel in formative research and immerse myself in brand and creative strategy. I guide clients and develop soup-to-nuts campaigns—from cross-platform promotions to website overhauls and rebrands to above-the-fold features. From concept to tear-down, I spice up consumer and trade events with equal parts enthusiasm and attention to detail. Upstream of issues, I conceive and implement programs that tackle complex challenges and create measurable quantitative and qualitative results.
I’m often a one-woman powerhouse, but when working on a team, coaching, or collaborating, I don’t just bring business savvy to the table: Positive culture, emotional intelligence, moments for mindfulness, and inclusivity are inherent to any job well done.
And I always wrap with a CTA: If you see opportunities to work together, collaborate pro bono or exchange a good chuckle, please be in touch via jenbutson(at)gmail.com.
Recent Clients & Work Experience
- At the intersection of precision medicine and machine learning, Polaris Genomics is pioneering a biologically-based approach to mental health care to create a future free from suicide, stigma, and suffering in silence. It has been a privilege to support this Maryland-based Black-veteran-and-woman-led biotech startup as their Director of Communications since 2020.
- I joined the Six-Point team in 2020 as a strategist focused on public health and non-profits. While supporting State agency partners working on harm reduction and workplace safety, combating the opioid crisis, I’ve also focused on private duty nursing agencies advocating for the home hospital movement, and engaged biological dental clients focused on increasing public health via the oral-overall health connection. It has been a joy to simultaneously lead business and brand strategy workshops with leadership teams across several industries. This Massachusetts-based agency focuses on the special challenges and opportunities of family-owned and generational businesses.
- While heading up marketing and honing my headstand at New Haven, CT’s top-voted yoga and wellness center, Breathing Room from 2017-2022, I also led communications for the naturopathic physicians and holistic wellness practitioners within the center. I am still active in Asana(both the yoga and management platform!) and a 200hr certified yoga teacher with United We Om trauma-informed and Prison Yoga Training experience.
- For three years, I developed the community outreach, corporate partnerships, and marketing support for the East Coast’s first and largest Run for Refugees; it’s a benefit that raises awareness and vital funds for refugee and immigrant resettlement.
- Acing Academics from PreK to Phd: I organized twice-monthly events for Yale University grad families and managed the social media from 2016-2018, and again for a mid-pandemic stint in 2020. I also designed Yale Grad Student Life Center‘s print brochures. At the same time, it was a joy to assist an independent preschool in growing its community engagement, benefit events and enrollment for two years.
- Singing the praises of Americana powerhouse, Red Molly, and coaching several independent music artists in marketing content and social media strategy, I also got to take the mic myself, speaking at the New England Songwriters Retreat in 2019, and yes, I’m always up for karaoke too!
- Illustrating its loveliness, I supported the Vermont Arts Council with PR and social media campaigns focused on their 50th anniversary and on-going arts promotion, 2016-18.
- My current beloved biotech clients are not my first foray in precision health and genomics. In 2015, I supported the Fluidigm marketing team with social media and targeted industry events promotion and Athari BioSciences with their launch in 2020.
